What Is Autism

Autism can also be known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Nobody knows exactly what causes autism and everyone with Autism is different.

People with autism may have difficulties:

  • Making and keeping friends
  • Understanding people and situations
  • Understanding their own and other people’s emotions
  • Understanding language and communicating

They may

  • Do things over and over again
  • Become distressed or upset when changes are made to their routines
  • Be over or under sensitive to touch, taste, sight, smells, sounds or movement

Children and Young People (CYP) may have some or similar difficulties but do not have autism, this may be because they have other difficulties which may include problems with learning, speech and language difficulties,  mental health or social difficulties. It is important that other possibilities are considered including autism.

Within our team we assess autism in a variety of ways using many different resources and use the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder.
