What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is also sometimes referred to as Attention  Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Hyperkinetic Disorder (HKD).

The exact cause of ADHD is not known.

Children and young people with ADHD:

  • find it difficult to sit still
  • lose focus easily
  • move from one task to another without completion
  • have poor self control

ADHD behaviours may have an impact on:

  • Self esteem
  • Learning
  • Relationship with parents, siblings and peers

Similar behaviours may be seen in children and young people with problems such as speech and language difficulties and learning, sensory, mental health or social difficulties and these should be considered during assessment.
